The Dragonflies project
Abstract
The WWW offers opportunities and frustrations to biologists.
In the early days of the web a query to a search engine might bring 1000 hits for the term 'dragonflies' and around 100 hits for 'Odonata' ... all of which were information rich and potentially useful. Today Google produced over ten million hits for 'dragonflies' and nearly three-quarters of a million for 'Odonata'. With improved indexing the first several pages of hits were highly relevant, but much that is good must be low on the listings compared to little vignettes produced by enthusiastic web designers who care about search engine performance.
