Is Maoripamborus fairburni Brookes (Coleoptera: Carabidae) a generalist feeder on invertebrates?

Abstract

Maoripamborus fairburni Brookes is arguably New Zealand's most distinctive carabid beetle. Rare and 19-21mm long, it occurs in Northland and northern Taranaki. The prothorax is greatly narrowed apically, while the head and jaws are reduced to a protruding, narrow pincette. These adaptations somewhat resemble those of some Eurasian, snail-eating carabid beetles in the genus Cychrus, which enable them to consume a snail within its narrow, winding shell.
