Abstract

All the signs point to 2014 becoming a bumper year for the economy. Business confidence is higher than for many years, the Christchurch rebuild is (finally) getting under way and retail spending is rapidly increasing. Should the general public, and entomologists, be concerned? The last year gave several warning indications of potential trouble. Apart from the rapid and extreme climate fluctuations in both hemispheres, closer to home there were several worrying indications that all is not well. The Fonterra revelations about potential botulism contamination in its exported milk powder, coming on top of the last few years' invasions of the Varroa mite, and the PSA bacterium, have served to illustrate how vulnerable our economy is. We can be seen to be potentially subjected to economic ruin by a determined saboteur, for even the threat of contamination of our exports, pest damage to crops or just wrongly completed paperwork can lead to huge financial loss.
